We dust first and mop last

Each visit follows the same order

Recurring house cleaning is the regular upkeep of a home people actually live in. You pick how often we come. Every visit gives the kitchen and bathrooms the most time, because those two rooms get dirty fastest. The rest of the house gets dusted, and every floor gets vacuumed or mopped. The goal is that nothing sits long enough to turn into a scrubbing job. A counter wiped every visit takes two minutes. A shower that gets skipped for a couple of months takes a lot longer.

Inside each room we work from the top down. Dust comes off ceiling fans, light fixtures, shelves and door tops first, then window sills and furniture, then baseboards. Counters and sinks get wiped after that. Floors are always last: we vacuum first to pick up grit and hair, then mop the hard floors. The order matters because dust falls. Knock it off a fan after the floor is mopped and you get a gray film on a floor that was clean ten minutes ago.

When it is done right, you notice it with your hands more than your eyes. The stovetop is not tacky, and the bathroom faucet has no white crust around its base. Miss a step and it shows up by the next visit. Mop a floor that was never vacuumed and the grit turns into muddy streaks. Helena winters track grit onto your floors

Helena winters are long, and the sand spread on icy roads comes into the house on boots and dog paws. It collects at the entryway first, then works its way down the hall. On hardwood or vinyl plank, that sand acts like sandpaper under every step. We vacuum it up before any mop touches the floor. Push grit around with a wet mop and you grind it into the finish. That is how the floor by a back door goes dull for good.

The other winter mess is the white film from ice melt. It dries on tile and hardwood near the doors and looks like a haze that a dry mop only spreads. It comes off with a damp cloth and rinse water we change often, so the film gets lifted instead of pushed around. Boot trays and the mats under them need the same treatment. Leave that residue for a month and it starts to eat into the finish on wood floors.

Then there is the furnace, which runs for months. Forced air keeps dust moving, and in Helena's dry winter air it clings to TV screens and plastic with static. Vent covers and return grilles collect a gray fuzz that blows back out if nobody wipes them. Homes with a wood stove or pellet stove get a fine ash that settles on every flat surface nearby. We wipe those spots every visit through the heating season.

Older Helena houses need different care

A lot of Helena's housing is old. The west side and the blocks around downtown are full of brick and wood frame houses. Many still have plaster walls and their original hardwood floors. Old wood floors do not hold up to strong cleaners or a soaking wet mop. Water left standing works into the seams between boards and lifts their edges. On these floors we use a mop that is damp, never dripping, and we dry anything that pools.

Old bathrooms take a lighter touch. Original tile and old porcelain tubs scratch under abrasive powder, and once the glaze is scratched it stains more easily from then on. We clean them with non-scratch pads and let the cleaner sit instead of scrubbing hard. Radiators in older homes collect dust between the fins, and that dust gives off a burnt smell when the heat comes on. A long, thin brush clears it out in a few minutes.

Newer homes out in the Helena Valley and around Montana City have different surfaces. Ranch houses and split-levels often have vinyl plank floors and fiberglass tub surrounds. Fiberglass goes dull if you scrub it with anything rough, so it gets a soft cloth. Log homes have walls where dust sits on top of every log and in the cracks along it. We dust those walls by hand from the top down, because a quick pass misses most of it.

Regular cleaning keeps buildup from setting in

Plenty of houses in the valley north of town run on well water. Hard water leaves white spots on glass shower doors and a crust around faucets and drains. Caught every visit, those spots wipe off with a mild cleaner. Left for a few months, they bond to the glass and the chrome. After that it takes a stronger cleaner and real scrubbing, and some of the shine never comes back.

Kitchens work the same way. Cooking puts a thin layer of grease on the range hood and the cabinet doors next to the stove. Fresh, it comes off with warm water and a degreaser in one pass. Once it sits, dust sticks to it and it turns into a brown, sticky coat that has to be softened and scraped. The top of the fridge collects the same greasy dust, where nobody sees it. On a regular schedule it never gets that far.

Summer brings its own dirt. Helena summers are dry and often windy, and dust blows in through screens and settles on sills near open windows. Late summer can bring wildfire smoke, which leaves a fine gray film that smears if you wipe it dry. We lift it with a damp cloth and rinse the cloth often. Between visits, keeping windows shut on smoky days cuts down how much comes in.

Pet hair builds up between visits

Dogs and cats shed all year, and in spring they drop their winter coats in clumps. Hair collects along baseboards, under beds, on stair edges and in corners a vacuum head cannot reach. We run a crevice tool along those edges before the main vacuuming. If the edges get skipped, the hair drifts back onto the open floor within a day. Then the room looks like nobody cleaned it.

Pet accidents are a different problem from hair. Urine that soaks into carpet or the seams of a wood floor keeps smelling long after the surface looks clean. A regular wipe-down will not reach it.
