Gravel roads bring dust into the house

Montana City is spread out. Most houses sit on bigger lots in the foothills south of Helena. Many are up gravel roads, with pine and juniper on the slope behind. That space is why people live here, and it also means dust. Every car on the road lifts a fine gray powder. On a dry, windy afternoon it drifts inside and settles on window sills and the tops of cabinets.

That dust is fine and a little gritty, so a quick wipe mostly pushes it around. A regular clean here works from the top down, starting with ceiling fans and light fixtures. The floors go last, so nothing falls onto a surface we already finished. Baseboards and sliding door tracks hold the most. Skip them for a season and the grit packs in until the door starts to drag.

Winter changes the job. The windows stay shut for months. If the house has a wood stove, a light film of soot and ash settles on everything near it. That calls for a deep clean: walls washed down, vent covers wiped, cabinet fronts degreased, and the inside of the oven and fridge done. Mud season is hard on carpet

Spring in the foothills is a long, slow thaw. The snow melts, the gravel roads turn to mud, and it comes inside on boots and on the dog. The entry rug and the path from the back door to the kitchen show it first. Once it dries, that mud turns into a fine clay that settles at the base of the carpet fibers, where a home vacuum barely reaches. Every step then grinds it in and wears the fibers down.

Carpet cleaning pulls out the soil a vacuum leaves behind. Traffic lanes that had gone gray often come back close to the color of the rest of the room, and the carpet feels softer underfoot. Pine pollen and needles cover the outside

A hillside house usually has its biggest windows on the view side, and those are the ones people look through every day. Late spring brings a yellow film of pine pollen that sticks to glass and screens, and road dust lands on top of it all summer. In a smoky fire season, a gray haze builds up on the outside of the glass too. We clean windows inside and out, screens and sills included.

Pine needles are the other problem. They come down through the year, heaviest in the fall, and pack into the gutters as a wet mat that holds water. When that water freezes, the weight can pull a gutter away from the roof edge. Meltwater then spills over the side and runs down the wall. Cleaning the gutters in the fall, after the needles drop and before the first hard freeze, prevents most of it.
